If you’re looking to create a podcast, perhaps you’re promoting your band, maybe you’re a music lover? No matter what your interest is in audio, a great audio player is a key component to building a successful website. We’ve found several of the best audio player plugins for WordPress to highlight in this collection. If you want to see some video player WordPress plugins, we’ve got a great looking collection for that as well.
Your first option is to simply use the built in audio player for WordPress. It’s a widget, so it can go into any widgetized area, like the sidebar, the footer or other locations on your front page. But, that technique is sort of limiting and it doesn’t look that cool to be honest, so we’re going to dive a little deeper into what’s possible with several different free and premium audio players.
Let’s get started.
Compact WP Audio Player
This is a free plugin, available on the WordPress.org repository. With over 40,000 active installations, this is among the most popular audio player plugins you can download. Most people seem to like it, it’s rated just over 4 stars so far. The player itself is an HTML/Flash hybrid, which may turn some people off. Flash seems to be on the way out, but I think it works in this case. This plugin is particularly small, it takes up almost no real estate on the screen, which is something that can be a bit bothersome for some plugins out there that hog a lot of space for the player. Compact WP Audio Player supports .mp3 and .ogg file types, though it doesn’t seem to support .wav or .flac file types. Then again, it works great on all browsers, so it’s a give and take.
Smart Podcast Player
Okay, so this one is called Smart Podcast Player. I’m not going to put too many premium plugins on this list, because I think there are some solid freebies out there that make it worth your while to download. This one, I’m going to make an exception. Smart Podcast Player has some features that I simply haven’t seen on other audio player plugins. There’s the email capture function for one. It does a nice job of allowing you to build your mailing list from audience members. There’s a podcast player that allows for unlimited episodes, a smart track player and more. The overall look is clean and modern too. You can make your player stick to the top or bottom of the screen and the creator of this plugin says it makes binge listening easy. Hopefully true!

He’s pretty modern. this plug-in uses Amazon CloudFront to accelerate your website and make sure that everything is delivered in a very user-friendly, high-performance way. this is a fairly niche plug-in, so it might not be great for everyone, though I do think that it works quite well for what it does.
WavePlayer, WordPress Audio Player with Waveform and Playlist
If you’re looking for an audio player that has a little bit different look to it, Wave Player might be a good choice. This audio player is fully customizable and it even previews your audio clips with a really cool wave form of your audio file. I think it adds a little bit of visual interest to what could otherwise be a fairly straightforward audio post. For podcasts, for music clips, this plugin has full integration with the media manager and full WooCommerce integration.
You can create batch lists of products from different tracks and albums. This is a premium plug-in and it costs $26, but considering it is one of the only audio players that shows waveforms, that might be worth the price to you. Music Player for WooCommerce
Of all the plugins here that are completely free, this is the only one that supports WooCommerce. It’s got a hold of it normal features that the other audio playlist plugins offer, but it goes a little bit further adding a settings and music player for WooCommerce. You can include music players in all of your products, there’s a checkbox to include the music player on a case-by-case basis. You can even have a music player in the shopping cart. It’s a pretty interesting plugin come up but another one that hasn’t proven to be a particularly popular. This is a very specific plug in and it’s not going to be exactly what everyone is looking for. But, in order to keep this collection of audio players complete, I’m including it.

Audio Dock is by Themify and they’ve released this free audio player to help you build nice looking audio posts. There are a few key features like unlimited tracks, custom titles and you can switch up the background color on the playbar. The overall design is nice, but that can’t be adjusted, so the sort of 2.5D ribbon, that’s the way this plugin is going to display your audio. Could be a bug, could be a feature. It all depends on the style you’re looking to create. This plugin is also available on the WordPress repository. It doesn’t look like it’s particularly popular with just about 1,000 downloads overall and a 4 star rating.
Fullwidth Audio Player WordPress Plugin
This plug-in lets you put a full with audio player at the top or bottom of a new browser window. You can even have a pop-up audio player or put it somewhere else on the page. I guess what I’m saying, this is an audio browser plug-in with the latest technology and a lot of flexibility. It looks great on all devices because it’s fully responsive. The user experience that this plug-in delivers it is up to the task on mobile devices and desktops.
You can create playlists, add tracks to a post or page, perfect for creating a music page where folks can view all the tracks that you’ve created and create a playlist for themselves. this plugin has been sold over three thousand times, meaning it is quite popular, though the developer has not updated it in a couple of years. So, that’s something that you should certainly keep in mind as the audio plug in landscape changes quickly. It’s hard to tell if this plug-in is going to stand the test of time.
Of course, it’s unrelated, but if you want to see some full width WordPress themes to go with this plug-in, we’ve created a bigtime collection to peruse.
