There are a number of different ways to sell your WordPress themes or plugins. Of course, you can do it yourself on your very own website, which is always a great idea. However, if you’re just launching your web development career, it can be very difficult to gain much traction in terms of web traffic. so, why not turn to a more established website that already drives traffic and sell your WordPress themes or plugins there?
We’ve gathered up a big list of the absolute best WordPress marketplace websites where you can upload your plugins or themes and generate sales.
So, if you want to get your foot in the door and start making money as a WordPress developer, these are currently the best marketplaces to sell your stuff.
At the time of writing this, ThemeForest.net is currently in the top 1000 websites in the world. It was actually #800 on the button. That’s a staggering amount of traffic coming to ThemeForest every single day. So, with that much traffic, it must be a really great place to upload your WordPress themes, right? Well, yes, it is. there are over 40,000 WordPress themes and other web design templates that have been uploaded by thousands of different authors. This is the biggest marketplace for selling WordPress themes anywhere.
of course, with that many themes, it can be challenging to stand out. A lot of people have difficulty getting much traction because some of the more established designers keep cranking out really solid WordPress themes. But, quality is King and if you are able to craft a hit WordPress theme, you can make literally thousands of dollars per day.
Your split of the commission is a little over 60% for every sale. And, your commissions actually increase as your total sales increase. By the time you’ve sold $75k worth of themes, you’ll be collecting closer to 90% for every sale. That’s if you decide to become an exclusive author. Non-exclusive authors get a flat fee of 45%. Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
So, ThemeForest certainly has a lot going for it and with all that traffic, it’s pretty hard to argue with joining up and selling your themes exclusively on that marketplace.
The flip side of the coin for ThemeForest is CodeCanyon. Like ThemeForest, CodeCanyon is part of the envato umbrella of websites. While CodeCanyon is not quite as popular as ThemeForest, it ranks just outside the top 2,000 in global internet engagement according to Alexa, it’s still the most popular marketplace for selling plugins and add-ons for WordPress.
If you’re into coding plugins, CodeCanyon is definitely one of the places you should consider uploading your work too. It’s got the same basic payout structure as ThemeForest, so again, it gets a lot of traffic and it’s probably worthwhile to become an exclusive author on CodeCanyon if you are interested in maximizing your income without redoubling your efforts on multiple different websites.
TemplateMonster is another solid option for selling your WordPress themes or plugins. This marketplace gets over 2 million visits per month on average and it’s ranked around number 4000 in the world in terms of traffic. That’s a significant amount and that much traffic is bound to generate some sales. TemplateMonster makes it quite simple to sign up to start selling your themes. You can reach millions of customers, help put your brand name out there and increase awareness of your business. after you submit a theme, it’s reviewed to see whether or not it upholds quality standards. TemplateMonster has a number of specialists who can help you grow your skills and improve your sales with each item you upload. There’s help and support available as well to get you started or answer any questions you have.
So, what can you sell on TemplateMonster? Well, plenty. You’ve web templates, plugins, presentations for software like as PowerPoint or Keynote presentations, graphic design work, premade logos and more. If you choose to sell exclusively, you can turn up to 70% per month, not a bad total at all. all you have to do is reach 100,000 in total sales to get to that level. As a nice little added bonus, new authors get the full 70% for the first three months selling. That can certainly help get you started to work building a career in selling WordPress themes and plugins.
One level down the list is Mojo marketplace. This is not nearly as popular a destination as the websites we’ve listed previously, but it’s still well within the top 40,000 websites in the world. They get quite a bit of traffic and it can be an option if you want to expand your horizons to new marketplaces. Signing up takes a while and I’m not sure why, but I’ve heard that a lot of folks get rejected when applying to sell there. Just to warn you.
The good thing is, Mojo Marketplace has agreements with several hosting providers like HostGator and BlueHost to help sell WordPress themes and plugins to all of the thousands of folks who have their sights hosted on BlueHost or HostGator. So, that can be another avenue to expanding your reach. There are quite a number of themes already available and the process of getting your themes approved is pretty simple. So, that’s another option.
Creative market is a relative newcomer to the WordPress theme marketplace competition. It’s quite a popular website, just north of the top 2,000 in the world. So, it gets quite a bit of traffic and that can help raise the awareness of the WordPress themes you have created.
A lot of the themes in the creative market website are, to be honest, a little bit cheaper than on some of the other marketplaces. But, your share of the income is a bit higher than some of the others, so it all works out in the end. Author’s get 70% of each and every sale, even if they are not exclusive. You can list any design assets you’ve included in your WordPress theme, fonts and photography, icons and things like that.
If you have created any of these elements, you can even sell them. The creative marketplace website has lots of different stuff going on. Fonts, graphics, add-ons, even 3D models can be purchased through the Creative Market e-commerce site. So, it’s another pretty solid option for selling stuff.
Okay, this one is a little different. WordPress.org is a really unique way to help monetize your website building enterprise. While none of the themes are actually for sale on wordpress.org, you can get free versions of premium themes included in the massive WordPress repository. These themes get lots of downloads, you can really expand your reach by creating a free theme and then selling access to premium features on your own website.
This is a really popular strategy to monetize plug-in and WordPress themes alike. The reach that wordpress.org has is staggering. Currently, wordpress.org has just cracked into the top 600 websites in the world, so they’re getting an incredible amount of traffic as people search for free WordPress themes and plugins. This can be a really solid way to help grow your business at the beginning. After all, those free downloads can include footer links to your homepage that can improve your domain authority and get quite a bit of traffic on their own.
So, it’s a completely different concept then selling themes directly on a marketplace, but it is a strategy that can work really well if you got a number of outstanding themes with both free and premium versions.
Believe it or not, another place you can sell WordPress themes is Etsy. While Etsy is known for handcrafted items, reclaimed furniture, home decor, gardening products and other crafty stuff, it also lets people sell handcrafted items like WordPress themes. If you are not looking to be an exclusive seller anywhere, this can be another way to add a bit of unique outreach to a different marketplace.
Some people who are looking for a website might not have even heard of some of these websites on our list. So, if they can find your creations on Etsy, maybe that’s the only way to reach them. if you have chosen not to become exclusive on any other website, you might as well upload to Etsy and see what happens.
Keeping with the idea of listening exactly how popular each website is, Etsy is currently ranked just outside the top hundred websites in the world. So, it gets a massive amount of traffic, even if the vast majority of that traffic is probably not looking for WordPress themes. So, it’s a bit of a balancing act.
Honestly, you’re probably not going to get rich selling WordPress themes on Etsy. You have to pay to list each item and then as he takes a small fee from every sale. It’s not likely that you’re going to have a massive volume of sales, but every little bit helps, right? I suppose anything that gets your name out there in front of some unique potential buyers can be helpful.
Codester is another option for selling you are WordPress themes. This is a bit of a unique set up, it has both free downloads and premium downloads for relatively small to use. I’m not going to spend too much time on this one, it’s not really one of my favorites. Codester is increasing in popularity of late, so perhaps it’s want to keep an eye on. again, similar to Etsy, it’s probably not going to lead to full-time, luxury living, but it can get your content out there in front of a lot of people and maybe that’s enough to make it worthwhile. And, you never know. It is the fastest growing website on this list, so…who knows!
Just to check things out, I ended up signing up for an account on Codester and it was really simple, the process could not have been more to the point. And I took a deeper look at their traffic, it’s really solid. So, perhaps this is hey potential platform for selling plugins in WordPress themes. It certainly does have enough different categories available, so it would appear this theme could you really solid for crafting your own online business selling WordPress
